After Care
-
Leave the Bandage On: Your tattoo artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a bandage or plastic wrap. Leave this on for at least 2-4 hours or as instructed by your artist. This protects the tattoo from bacteria and helps it heal.
-
Gently Wash: After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattooed area with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water. Use your clean hands, avoiding abrasive materials like washcloths or loofahs. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
-
Apply an Antimicrobial Ointment: Apply a thin layer of antimicrobial ointment (such as Bacitracin or Aquaphor) to the tattooed area. Be sure to use clean hands or a disposable applicator. This helps prevent infection and keeps the tattoo moisturized.
-
Avoid Soaking: For the first two weeks, avoid soaking your tattoo in water. This means no swimming, hot tubs, or long baths. Quick showers are fine, but avoid direct water pressure on the tattoo.
-
Keep It Moisturized: After the first few days, switch to a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizer. Apply a thin layer to the tattooed area several times a day to keep the skin hydrated and promote healing.
-
Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect your tattoo from the sun for at least the first few weeks. If you must be in the sun, use a Minnesota-approved sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously and reapply often, especially if sweating or swimming.
-
Avoid Scratching or Picking: As your tattoo heals, it may itch or flake. Resist the urge to scratch or pick at it, as this can damage the tattoo and increase the risk of infection. Instead, gently pat or slap the area to alleviate itching.
-
Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye on your tattoo for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
